National Electrical Manufacturers' Association (NEMA) starters are electrically controlled switches used to rapidly open (break) and close (make) a circuit. They are larger than the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) starters and are considred more rugged and durable.
Open housings are designed to disconnect the motor from the line at the time of starting or stopping of equipment. Ideal for inertial loads and they are finger safe.
Single or three-phase refers to either a single coil or three individual coils that connect to and run voltage through the connector. Single-phase lines are used for light-to-medium operations and three-phase lines are used for medium-to-heavy operations.
Non-reversing starters are designed with one phase line that connects to and runs voltage through the motor. The starter is used to turn a motor on and off.
